My name is Michalis Fragoulis.My family and I live on a
Greek island located in the South East Aegean Sea. The
island of Rhodes is the capital of a group of twelve islands
known as the DODEKANESE and considered of many to
be one of the most beautiful islands in the world!
During the years of antiquity the island served as the
cross-road between south-east Europe, the middle east
and north Africa, and because of Rhodes priviliged
position the island, more than two thousand years ago,
witnessed great economic development. The city of Rhodes
was founded at the northern-most tip of the island and
building commenced in 408 BC. It was designed to the
latest specifications and was considered the most
beautiful city in the Hellenistic world.
The greater part of Rhodes is mountainous and is mostly
covered by woods. The highest mountain,Attaviros,
stands 1215 m. above sea level, and the island covers an
area of 1.400 sq. klms.
Renowned for its beautiful bays and diversity in vegeta-
tion, which includes an impressively large amount of wild
flowers some of which are unique to the island alone!
Endless olive groves, citrus trees and vineyards cover most
of the islands interior. Rhodes has a very mild climate and
a very high percentage of sunshine, the highest in Greece!
These features make Rhodes a unique holiday resort.
The development of tourism in recent years has signifi-
cantly altered the social and economic life of the island
but, despite of the preoccupation of a considerable por-
tion of the population with tourism, agriculture and animal
husbandry continue to occupy many.
